Berlin, 1943. The 85-year-old Jewish woman Martha Liebermann (Thekla Carola Wied) faces the decision of her life: should the upper-middle-class widow of the world-famous and deeply revered painter Max Liebermann (Rüdiger Vogler) keep hoping for an exit permit from the Nazis, or flee to Switzerland with the help of Hanna Solf (Fritzi Haberland) and her resistance group? For Martha knows that the fame and wealth of earlier times will not protect her from deportation to a concentration camp for much longer. With a heavy heart, she resolves to leave her beloved homeland by illegal means and, in doing so, to abandon her late husband's works to the Nazis.
