Jörg Westphal

I'm a true child of '68, born in Suhl, Thuringia. I grew up in a country where bananas were rare but bratwurst and dumplings were plentiful. The end of the world was only a few kilometres away — the state border. Maybe that's why I wanted to become a cosmonaut or a helicopter pilot. Instead I stayed on the ground, finished school, and planned to study medicine.

Then came the fall of the Wall: a man accidentally promised freedom, and the Wall came down. Before he could take it back, I booked a ticket to Miami — finally, to fly! The wish to become a doctor faded, and I became a nurse instead. At the same time, I started doing theatre and discovered my passion for acting. To this day, standing on stage or in front of the camera feels like flying — no rocket required.
