Monsieur Claude and His Daughters

Monsieur Claude and His Daughters

On 1 December 2018, five of our actors take to the stage together in a premiere at Berlin''s Schlosspark Theater. This has never happened before, and we are very proud of our four lovely daughters of Monsieur Claude and of son-in-law Charles. Monsieur Claude and his wife Marie are a contented couple in the French provinces with four rather lovely daughters. They are happiest when family traditions remain exactly as they are. It is only when three of their daughters marry a Muslim, a Jew and a Chinese man that they come under pressure to adapt. The harsh wind of globalisation blows into the French way of life, and every cosy family gathering turns into an intercultural minefield. Music to the parents'' ears, then, is the youngest daughter''s announcement that she intends to marry a — hallelujah! — French Catholic. But when they find themselves face to face with their fourth son-in-law, the black Charles, Claude and Marie reach the end of their tether. Weakened by circumcision rituals, halal chicken and kosher dim sum, their reserves of tolerance are utterly spent. Yet Charles'' family, too, grinds its teeth mightily over this match. The parents agree to a meeting less to help with the wedding preparations than to sabotage them. What follows is a bloodbath of national resentments and cultural prejudices — until the family feather-plucking threatens to spoil the bridal couple''s appetite for the wedding altogether...
