The world is turned upside down: where things were once produced cheaply, wealth now reigns, and Europe's once-rich industrial nations have become low-wage countries. Liesl, Kathi and Hanni — three seamstresses in a large textile factory — fight their daily battle against a precarious existence. The only escape is to flee across the border into one of the sealed-off industrialised countries. But here, too, there is nothing but illegal work, prostitution and exploitation. What should they do? Go? Stay? And where, then, does happiness lie? With bitter sharpness, Volker Schmidt traces the fate of his three protagonists in a merciless, thoroughly economised world.
