A convent in which time seems to stand still. A community of Carmelite nuns performs the canonical hours, chants and everyday rituals. Into this strictly ritualised cosmos, from which everything abyssal and sexual has been banished, a dramatic event takes root — and with it sickness, passion, murder and incest: Sophocles' Oedipus tragedy, which soon, as "tyrant", takes control of the scene like a parasite seizing its host. Relentlessly, a plague claims its victims. King Oedipus sends his co-regent Creon to consult the oracle on how the evil might be averted, and summons the seer Tiresias. Yet all the signs keep leading back to him: he is said to have murdered the former king Laius and provoked the punishment of the gods. Enraged, Oedipus suspects Creon and Tiresias of a conspiracy, until proof shows him beyond doubt that he himself is the son of Laius, that he killed his own father and married his own mother, Jocasta. When she learns the truth, she hangs herself in the palace. Oedipus puts out his eyes with her hairpin.
