"Patong Girl" at the Festival des deutschen Films

Tomorrow, on 22 June, the moment arrives: "Patong Girl" has its world premiere at the Festival des deutschen Films in Ludwigshafen. The liberal SCHRÖDER family spend their Christmas holiday on the Thai resort island of Phuket. Of all places, in Phuket's seedy tourist stronghold of Patong, the younger son FELIX (18) falls for the beautiful Thai woman FAI (22). Fai comes from northern Thailand. Her parents have sent her to Phuket in the hope that a holiday will help her over her heartbreak. Felix's elder brother TOMMY (20) is firmly convinced that Fai is really a prostitute. But Tommy is a pain anyway. So, frankly, are his parents ANNEGRET (49) and ULLRICH (51). Felix is smitten with Fai, and she returns his feelings. What Felix does not learn is Fai's very particular secret: Fai is a ladyboy. She knows that Felix takes her for a "normal" woman. As a European, he cannot read the small signs that point to her being transsexual. Several times Fai means to reveal her sexuality to Felix, but never dares. There is a tearful goodbye at the end of the holiday. On the way to the airport, Felix decides to follow his heart and simply stay a week longer. His parents are horrified. That was never what "following your heart" was supposed to mean! Furious, Annegret too lets her return flight lapse. She will under no circumstances leave Felix alone in a foreign land with a presumed prostitute. Felix finds Fai at the bus station, just as she is setting off home to northern Thailand. As the bus pulls away, he makes up his mind and sits down beside her. On the journey, Felix learns that the wonderful woman he is so besotted with is in truth not a woman at all. How could he have noticed nothing? Is he blind, gay, or just utterly perverse? Even so, he cannot deny his attraction to Fai. Meanwhile, Annegret is searching for her son...
