Maik Briegand (Mišel Matičević) had turned his back on his home in the heart of Lower Lusatia, where his police career began before the fall of the Wall. But the regional crime investigator returns to solve the murder of a young girl — and once again finds himself confronted with the colleagues of his former precinct, his failed marriage, his daughter (Ella Lee) and his past. Inspector Annalena Gottknecht (Odine Johne) is determined not to be drawn into Briegand's old dependencies. Yet the more this forceful investigator opens up to the local people and the rugged beauty of Lusatia, the more she comes to understand her colleague.
Like the vast buckets of the excavators that patiently strip away layer after layer to wrest the lignite from the earth, the two investigators dig their way into the case, which ultimately leads them decades into the past — back to Maik Briegand's youth and a traumatic experience...
