Mila/Marija

Kevin Brand in an Austrian-Slovenian feature film

Teachers in the 1940s were not all what we would expect of an educator today. This autumn, Kevin Brand was on set in Carinthia in a decidedly unlovable role.

A mountain village in Carinthia, 1942. Nineteen-year-old Mila joins the partisans, who resist the National Socialists under the cover of the forests. Before long she is leading her own unit and facing decisions over life and death. When she tries to begin a new life after the war ends, Mila is confronted once again with the same question: conform or resist?
