Hanna gives up her great dream of competitive swimming in the GDR and, in the summer of 1989, flees across the Baltic Sea with her best friend Andreas, who has come under the scrutiny of the state. Fifty kilometres of water separate them from freedom. And only a thin, connecting cord around her wrist saves her from utter isolation.
At the Max Ophüls Preis film festival, "Jenseits der blauen Grenze" won the Audience Award for Best Film, the award for Best Young Actor for Willi Geitmann, and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.
