Kaiser Wilhelm Saws Wood

Kaiser Wilhelm Saws Wood

Kaiser Wilhelm confers with General Ludendorff and General Hindenburg about the state of the First World War after Karl I has become the new Emperor of Austria, then Kaiser Wilhelm steps outside to saw wood, as he always does when something has annoyed him. So at least say the historical records, and they appear to be authentic: the dialogue is based for the most part on the diary of Count Tamás Erdődy. It was discovered in February 2017 among the papers of an estate and subsequently acquired by the Austrian State Archives. For 645 years the Habsburgs ruled large parts of Europe and the world. The First World War sends their empire — the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy — reeling. When Emperor Karl I inherits the throne from his aged predecessor Franz Josef in November 1916, he wants peace, above all in order to save his realm. To that end Karl is prepared to risk a rupture with his comrade-in-arms, Germany. He pays bitterly for it. The so-called "Sixtus Affair" buried the last chance of peace and hastened the downfall of the Habsburgs as a ruling dynasty. Karl was their last emperor. The scenes featuring Hans Holzbecher were filmed in November 2017 at Schloss Eckartsau near Vienna. The Betrayal of the Emperor — Karl I and the Sixtus Affair — Das Ende der Habsburger is a television documentary by Fritz Kalteis for ZDF/ARTE and ORF.
