Is it permissible to make a comedy about Muslims in Germany? The series "Habibi Baba Boom" simply gets on with it. It deals with Islamist terrorism, botched calls to prayer and circumcision celebrations — but not in the way you might expect.
It is tricky. Which is, fundamentally, a good starting point for a zeitgeist comedy of errors and entanglements. And it could hardly be otherwise if you set out to mirror German reality in the 2020s, willingly stepping into the minefield you inevitably enter when you engage with diversity, identity and, above all, religion — and doing so with a smile on your face, with lightness and a knowing wink. You will never be able to please everyone. But perhaps even the especially entrenched might allow themselves a little smirk at the way stereotypes are taken to task here and, ideally, turned on their head.
