THE GLOBE IN LONDON

Lasse Möbus and the Magic of Shakespeare

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears!

As part of my acting master's at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, I had the privilege of spending January learning, rehearsing and performing at the Globe Theatre in London — playing Brutus and Casca from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.

There was something truly magical about standing on those open-air boards in the midst of fast-moving London, speaking Shakespeare's words, written precisely for this stage. It feels somehow earthy. And connected: to sky and earth, to the history of this wonderful profession and, of course, to the audience seated and standing so close around the curve of the stage.

When I began digging into this Shakespeare, I encountered — as I always do in his texts — the people. I believe he wrote them in there, and they don't want to be depicted, they want to be experienced through play! When you dare to do that, these verses can still touch and move us, and I am so grateful to have been able to devote myself to this thrilling task in such a special place.

For no matter how grand the text or how high the dramatic stakes, as in Julius Caesar, the human element is always current.

To search for it and dig for it — whether for the stage or for the camera — is my greatest joy!
