Wales, 1939. The National Socialist upper class sends its daughters to English boarding schools for a proper upbringing. Old England is still in vogue, for now. The girls have been brought into line with the zeitgeist in Berlin and raised in unwavering loyalty to the regime — which does not sit well in the Kingdom, and however well-meaning the teachers may be in their wish to enrich the German pupils' minds with liberal ideas, not just with English vocabulary, the attempt fails. The headmistress is played by the wonderful Lady Judi Dench, and the teacher Thomas by Eddie Izzard. Oscar winner Jim Broadbent is in the cast too, and alongside all these icons of English acting, Bianca Nawrath plays the German pupil Paula. We visited Bianca at a castle in Wales and chatted with Lady Dench. Judi says: she's brilliant. Who? Bianca, of course! "Six Minutes to Midnight" was directed by Andy Goddard.
