In their second joint case, the Dresden chief inspectors Bärbel Wallenstein and her daughter Kim investigate the puzzling murder of the Romanian restaurant owner Marius Goian. A staged robbery-murder is merely the first false trail, for as the autopsy reveals, the dead man has died for the second time already. Goian died his "first death" two years earlier, when, under the name Selin, he had worked for the red-light boss Aleksej Petrov in Frankfurt an der Oder and was involved in a robbery that remains unsolved to this day. As an informant he had at the time wanted to testify against Petrov, but then he suddenly vanished without trace. By now Petrov controls the Dresden underworld. Did he help his former employee disappear, or silence him for good? What part does the young rent boy Roman play, who has been on the run since the night of the murder, and to what extent is his girlfriend Jessica involved, who wants to break out of her respectable family? In their inquiries the Wallensteins, an ill-matched mother-and-daughter duo, sink into a quagmire of blackmail, lies and double standards behind respectable Dresden facades.
