Under the title DING DONG! THE WITCH IS DEAD! the diploma year develops a project based on antiquity. The title is taken from the famous 1939 musical film "The Wizard of Oz", in which the destruction of the witch forms the thrilling centrepiece — just as it does in "Hansel and Gretel". In the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, the children save themselves from being eaten by burning the witch in her own oven. The parallel to the "Oresteia" is obvious. Clytemnestra wishes her children dead; in the eyes of Electra and Orestes, the mother is thoroughly evil and must be destroyed. In the fairy tale the eradication of evil may work, but in life it breeds only pain and misery. So, at least, claim Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides — and have done for more than 2,500 years. Electra: So I tell you: you admit that you murdered the father! – What word could possibly be more shameless than this? Clytemnestra: You are forever a child – it is your nature – devoted to your father. So it is. Some are devoted to the father, others prefer the mother.
