With the premiere of "Die Welle", Aurel Klug shows not only that he can breathe a "broad range of emotions" (General-Anzeiger) into his leading role of David, but also that he played a key part in developing the piece and reworking Morton Rhue's novel. Since the material has lost none of its relevance, it was promptly relocated to the here and now. The evening at the Junges Theater Bonn bears witness to the value of a living culture of remembrance.
"In a history lesson, the teacher Ben Ross shows a film about the Second World War and the Holocaust. The teenagers react very differently to the brutal images from the concentration camps. Some are deeply disturbed by them, others are rather annoyed. They consider the subject long since closed and are certain that something like Nazi rule and the Holocaust could no longer happen today. So Ben Ross decides to carry out an experiment at the school to make the kids realise just how wrong they are." (JTB)
The production by JTB artistic director Moritz Seibert strikingly shows how the project spirals out of control — putting not only relationships and friendships to the test, but also raising the questions: Could this happen to us again? And how can we prevent it?
