De Stamhouder (Legacy) is the screen adaptation of Alexander Münninghoff's highly praised autobiographical book "The Son and Heir" and has now aired on NPO 1 (Dutch public broadcasting).
It tells the story of Alexander Münninghoff (Matthijs van de Sande Bakhuyzen), who in the late 1960s falls in love with the self-assured, free-spirited Ellen (Sallie Harmsen). When, after a lovely night together, he confesses that his father, Frans Münninghoff, was an SS man during the war, Ellen reacts with rejection. Her family suffered greatly under the war. She disappears from his life ... only to reappear a good month later. She is pregnant. The twenty-somethings want to keep the child and decide to marry — on the condition, however, that Alexander confronts his family's dark past. Alexander discovers that he knows very little about his parents and his grandfather.
Jörg Westphal plays "Siegfried Bauer", the second husband of Wera (Lisa Karlström), the mother of Alexander Münninghoff.
