Mochila is the name given to the hand-sewn bags of the four tribes living in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta — the Kogi, the Arhuaco, the Wiwa and the Kankuamo. They are worn with the strap slung diagonally across the chest. As a rule, each man carries two of them crossed over one another. In one he keeps his personal, ritual and spiritual items, such as the poporo and the coca leaves, as well as a kind of medicine pouch. The second bag holds all his other private belongings.
The "CAFÉ KOGI" project was initiated by the indigenous Kogi people in 2014 to buy back their former land and, in particular, sacred sites that matter deeply to them. Time is pressing, as more and more land is being irrevocably destroyed and built over. We are very glad that, thanks to you, this can now happen faster.
Café Kogi has arranged a collaboration with the association Lebensraum Regenwald e.V., so that you can donate to the association's account DE81 7605 0101 0010 3342 17 under the reference "Spende Kogi-Indianer" — with a donation receipt, of course. In 2019 the café started with 2,000 euros; in 2020, thanks to you, almost 10,000 euros were already raised. For this, our heartfelt thanks on behalf of the Kogi!
