When Detective Chief Inspector Robert Karow comes home, a hearse is parked outside his building. Karow's neighbour is dead. For weeks the inspector lived next to a corpse and noticed nothing. Karow is shaken, while the landlady Petra Olschewski seems conspicuously eager to have the place cleaned. Although he never had any contact with the man, Karow spontaneously enters the neighbouring flat and declares it a crime scene. When the forensic pathologist Jamila Marques discovers a shot to the back of the neck on the already mummified body, Nina Rubin does begin to consider Karow's theory of "eviction by murder", and turns her attention to the landlady. Karow, meanwhile, follows a trail to clans who send youngsters like Ana and Magda to break into the homes of the elderly in Berlin. Karow comes into contact with Gerd Böhnke, a retired judge who was the victim of just such a break-in. Did Karow's dead neighbour suffer a similar fate? The more the detectives learn about Gerd Böhnke, the more they come to see the holder of the "Distinguished Jurist of the GDR" award in a new light.
